Discover BEBBUX – A Taste of Maltese Tradition, Sustainably Reimagined.
For the past five years, our dedicated team of researchers—each certified in professional snail farming techniques—has been studying Malta’s natural environment to build a sustainable, eco-friendly snail farming model.
We believe that Malta deserves an agricultural future that respects nature, supports local ecosystems, and strengthens our economy.
Every step of our project is guided by research, passion, and Maltese heritage.
Our mission
Our mission is to elevate Malta’s agricultural future by combining scientific research with traditional practices. Through certified expertise in snail farming and continuous study of local ecosystems, we work to produce high-quality, sustainably farmed snails while protecting biodiversity and promoting responsible resource use. Every step we take is guided by innovation, environmental respect, and a commitment to strengthening Malta’s rural economy.
Our vision
Our vision is to establish Malta as a leading model for sustainable snail farming, where modern research and natural harmony shape a thriving circular economy. We aim to inspire communities, support local farmers, and create a resilient food system that honours Maltese heritage while embracing the technologies and environmental principles of tomorrow.

Our team
Our strength lies in our individuality. Set up by Derek D'Amato, the team strives to bring in the best talent in various fields, from researchers to Specialists and Designers.
Derek D’Amato is a Maltese researcher and sustainability advocate with a multidisciplinary background spanning aquaculture, environmentally conscious agriculture, and strategic business innovation. With more than five years of applied research in sustainable snail farming, Derek has played a key role in developing Bebbux, a project dedicated to merging Maltese tradition with modern ecological farming techniques. His work focuses on creating a circular, resource-efficient model for snail production that strengthens Malta’s rural economy while preserving local biodiversity.
Derek’s academic journey reflects a deep commitment to advancing sustainable development in Malta. He is currently completing a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), where his pilot study investigates consumer adoption of small home aquaponics systems in Malta. This research examines public attitudes, perceived benefits, behavioural influences, and barriers to adopting home-based aquaponics setups. By exploring the potential for decentralised and environmentally responsible food production, Derek aims to contribute actionable insights that support Malta’s transition toward greener, community-driven food systems. His methodology relies on structured quantitative questionnaires targeting aquarium hobbyists and the general public to understand readiness and long-term potential.
In addition to his research, Derek actively contributes to aquaculture education. He develops detailed, visually supported learning materials for the Marine Ornamental Aquaria programme, helping students and hobbyists enhance their understanding of aquatic invertebrates, husbandry practices, and emerging breeding technologies.
His ongoing projects, including “Advancing Sustainable Farming in Malta – Integrating Emerging Technologies in Aquaponics and Snail Farming,” demonstrate Derek’s commitment to driving Malta toward smarter, cleaner, and more resilient agriculture. His long-term vision is to position Malta as a leader in sustainable micro-farming innovation, where traditional knowledge and cutting-edge research coexist to build a stronger ecological and economic future.
